Our Sample Cooling Coils
Designed for safe, accurate sample testing.
Industrial heat exchangers, designed for rapidly cooling fluid samples to safe testing temperatures without downtime.
Sample cooling coils, or sample coolers, are specialized heat exchangers used in industrial settings to cool hot water and condensate and to sub-cool steam samples. We manufacture our cooling coils in a range of materials and tubing options to suit the complex process needs of industrial companies across western Canada.
Nor’West Sample Cooling Coils
The culmination of 40 years of expert engineering.
Carefully designed by Nor’West Controls, and recently acquired into the TIW Western portfolio, our sample coolers were designed specifically for use with the steam grab samples on our OTSG packages and have since been custom-engineered to integrate seamlessly with any process system that requires a cooled sample stream.

About Sample Cooling Coils
Designed to quickly, safely cool down process sample streams.
Our tube-in-tube sample cooling coils are designed to cool down process sample streams. And while critically important for safe handling, sample cooling coils also allow for industrial steam and liquid samples to be cooled to temperatures that facilitate accurate test results and prevent damage to your testing equipment.
Each sample cooling coils is a counterflow tube-in-tube design. As the hot fluid travels through the coil, it efficiently transfers heat to the surrounding cooling medium flowing in the opposite direction. This maximizes heat exchange and delivers consistent results.
Our sample coolers drop samples to testing temperatures quickly and in a stable environment. This preserves sample integrity, especially when working with high-temperature and high-pressure systems, making our design ideal for testing or grab sampling.
Our sample cooling coils are trusted by companies in Canada’s heaviest and most regulated industries, including:
How Sample Cooling Coils work
A stabLE, FAST, and isolated process preventing contamination and flash steam.
Our sample cooling coils use a tube-in-tube design where a sample liquid is surrounded by a cooling liquid in nested coiled tubes. Using counter-flow principles, we can quickly leech heat from the sample liquid into the cooling liquid, safely and rapidly dropping the sample temperature in a contained environment. The stability, speed, and isolation of this process is critical for preventing contamination or flash steam.
Flash steam is the instant vaporization that results from a rapid loss of pressure in high temperature, high pressure liquid. It is dangerous, damaging to equipment, and compromises samples by both releasing non-volatile dissolved solids into the sample liquid and dissipating volatile components like oxygen scavengers and neutralizing amines. Both of these events can severely skew test results, including hardness, pH, and conductivity testing.
Most significantly, sample cooling coils like ours allow for testing without shutting the system down, preventing unnecessary downtime and allowing for continuous system and process monitoring.
Why Choose Our Sample Cooling Coils
Engineered to ensure reliable temperature reduction.
Our analytical sample cooling coils are engineered to ensure reliable temperature reduction of process samples in demanding industrial environments.
Each cooler is constructed from standard tube fittings and tubing although we manufacture them in a wide array of materials and wall thicknesses to suit your process conditions. They are both versatile and easy to maintain. Additionally, they have a modular design that allows for tube extensions at custom connection points to accommodate your preferred sample connection type.
We’ve designed a counterflow configuration which maximizes heat transfer efficiency, and the absence of sharp bends significantly reduces the risk of fouling or plugging, which we’ve gone one step further to prevent with a fully drainable design for easy maintenance and process integrity.
Additionally, the high-pressure sample tube is built without any external connections, which is a much safer design.
Each unit is supplied with a Canadian Registration Number (CRN) and is suitable for installation in ASME B31.3 piping systems.
