Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG)
Cogeneration is the industrial answer to waste not, want not.
Our Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) are designed for a greener approach to energy use and steam production. As the name suggests, HRSGs are built with an eye for efficiency. They use gas turbine exhaust with or without supplementary duct firing to generate steam. This is important for two reasons: your gas turbine can produce electricity and your turbine and gas burner will throw off a lot of consistent heat.
This is where cogeneration comes in. Your HRSG can be designed to produce electricity at the same time they generated the heat used to make steam. It doesn’t get much more efficient than that.
About Our HRSGs
Using waste heat to generate steam—and boost efficiency
Customized HRSGs are necessary due to variables in turbine models, steam pressure needs, and process integration. All our products are custom designed, engineered, and built for you. So you get precisely what you need.
Most of the oilsands HRSGs we’ve built in the past at TIW Western operate with a General Electric Frame 7EA Gas Turbine (GT). In normal operation, the turbine produces 80 MW of power, supplying most, if not all, the power needed for plant operations.
An HRSG operating behind a Frame 7EA can produce 1 million pounds of steam per hour, which makes them about 3 to 4 times larger than an average sized Once-Through Steam Generator.
Convenience and efficiency shouldn’t be limited to the industry’s biggest players, however, so we’ve also developed a much smaller cogeneration package that produces 8-10MW, which should suit smaller operators much better.

Why Choose Us
Custom work doesn’t mean much if your engineers and manufacturers can’t build what you need.
We pioneered steam generation in western Canada, and we’ve sat at the razor edge of its progress ever since.
HRSGs are very different in design and construction than an OTSG, but when we saw the potential they had for industries in Alberta, we knew we wanted to offer them to our customers. So we went looking for the best way to do that.
In 1997, we partnered with one of the world’s leading suppliers of drum style HRSGs, Nooter Erickson. They knew there was potential in the Canadian market, they just didn’t have the experience with oilfield steam generators in Canada that we’ve been building for decades. A partnership was the natural next step. Over the years, we’ve built a trusted, valued relationship with Nooter Erickson, and today, we license their advanced HRSG technology for our projects.
This way, you get access to our decades of experience working with steam generation and convenient location on Alberta’s high load corridor alongside the designs and expertise of some of the best HRSG engineers in the world.
